The College Media Hub

The College Media Hub

The following was my panel pitch for the 2016 SxSWEDU Conference

Ohio Northern University (ONU) created a new program “Multimedia Journalism” as a response to the change the media economy. Part of this change meant folding the local campus newspaper (Northern Review) into the rest of the media at ONU and publishing a digital edition, instead of print.

The framework for the fifteen minutes would begin with my understanding of the current state of college media and college journalism. This would be followed by the brief discussion of the journalism program at ONU, including a short history of the program. The next step would be a description of the current media program and our five-year plan for the program. Finally, the plan is to discuss the lessons learned during the transition.

Takeaways

  1. Applying a model of the campus media hub to multiple institutions of higher learning.
  2. Analyzing the student-run media platform of a typical college and understanding how those platforms can fit together.
  3. Selecting the most effective solution when it comes to media education at the college level.
